Modern Takes on Old Fashions

I feel like we live in such a great time for fashion right now, because it’s so cyclical, and so many trends from the past  have all come back at once.
We have the full-denim ensemble of the 90’s, the long maxi dresses of the 60’s, and the silhouettes and bright red lipstick of the 40’s and 50’s.
The past 5 years have been like a “best of” version of the last 50-60 years, mixed in with our more modern styles. I love it! Here are some inspiration boards I’ve made of some of my most favourite current styles, taken from the past and updated! The Modern Flowerchild

Spring Nail Polish Picks 2014

Spring styles to me have always been the younger sister of the vampy colours, big boots, and chunky knits of the Fall and Winter, and what better way to show off your brights than on your nails?!

When it’s comes to this time of year, I feel like I change up my polish every day! I’m just so in love with the bright shades that come out around this season, and because of that I’ve compiled a rainbow assortment of some of my favourite polishes for spring!

JULEP-CAMERON

IMG_6409

This colour is absolutely beautiful. A dusty lilac colour with SO much sparkle which is perfect for Spring!

Cameron has a “Stardust” finish-you know that nail polish trend lately that feels like sand? This is the same thing, but glittery. Mmm.

If you have to go more sophisticated or neutral, this is what I’d go for. It’s beautiful and unique without being too in your face.

RUBY WING-KITTEN HEELS

IMG_6410

This colour changes in the sun from the fluorescent pink you see here, to an orange-toned red. Fun!

I love using this as a pedi colour, it’s just so cute and fun! I also have my eye on one of their other colours, Wildflower, and basically anything in their Summer collection.

REVLON-CHINA FLOWER

IMG_6413

These Parfumerie colours haven’t been getting much love for some reason, but I love them!

Although not all of them smell as strongly as I’d like, every colour is gorgeous and I have to stop myself from buying more every time I go grocery shopping, haha.

This is a stunning neon-red colour which is a beautiful alternative to the classic dark reds worn in the Fall.

ESSIE-BRAZILIANT

IMG_6416

A gorgeous creamy bright orange with a pink duochromey shimmer. Yes, please?

A beautiful one for those beach days when you want to soak in all the warmth, and a colour I haven’t seen anywhere else!

CHINA GLAZE-LIGHTHOUSE

IMG_6420

Unfortunately unavailable now, this is one of my favourite topcoats ever.

It looks so pretty over any orange or yellow shade, and the shimmer is so fine and sparkly it’s like you have gold on your fingernails, and I’m a big fan of gold!

It could go on by itself, but it would require LOTS of coats to make it opaque, so I just put it over a yellow that matches this polish base and it shows up just like it does in the bottle.

REVLON-POSH

IMG_6423

Envy-coloured green which is perfect for those of you who want to take a slight break from the pastels that have been on the shelves lately.

This is still muted and creamy, but doesn’t have a white base like pastels do.

I love this on the nails as a pop of colour against an all-white outfit!

SINFUL COLOURS-HOTTIE

IMG_6435

Sinful colours is such an underrated brand to me. They tend to be pretty cheap, but they produce some really cool, unique colours.

I own this topcoat in this blue colour and in a pink, and they are some of my favourite polishes! Both of these topcoats look awesome layered over a white polish for a simple but cool mani.

What are your polish picks for Spring? Let me know in the comments!

Ipsy Glambag June 2014!

I’ve been subscribed to Ipsy for about 5 months now, and it’s easily my favourite subscription box! This month’s bag seemed to be a big hit with most people after last month’s skincare-oriented bag which didn’t seem to take well. I’m loving every aspect of this month’s bag, and I highly suggest Ipsy if you’re looking for a cheap and fun way to get your monthly beauty fix!

THE BAG:

IMG_6295

Easily my favourite so far! This bag was designed by Rebecca Minkoff, a designer whom I love! The print is an edgy hawaiian one which Minkoff has been using in her insanely beautiful collection this season. (I’m drooling over this Marlowe Mini in the same print with an exposed zip. Gorgeous.)  They put the zip on this bag a little bit wonky, but the bag itself is just beautiful.

THE PRODUCTS:

Overall a great bag this month, extremely happy with the balance of product types as I’m a makeup gal’ primarily but do love receiving skincare and and haircare products every once in a while. This bag seems super cohesive and I could easily use all of these in one look.

SKINN OLIVE & ENZYME CLEANSER:

IMG_6308

I’ve used this twice so far and like it quite a lot! It doesn’t lather, which I don’t mind, and does an awesome job at getting rid of stubborn makeup, the smell is great, like a creamsicle! As with most cleansers, I do have to use a moisturizer straight afterwards as it’s a bit drying, but overall this is really good, and you get a lot of it!

MARC ANTHONY DREAM WAVES BEACH SPRAY:

IMG_6309

I was excited to get a product for wavy hair, as I’ve been searching for a new texturizer. 😀 This works quite well at giving me waves, although not as well as others I’ve tried, and smells SO beachy and summery, which is great for me because I live really close to the beach so I could throw it in my bag and spray it in after swimming in the ocean! It does get a bit too hard/sticky for my liking, and my hair is difficult to brush through after using it, but otherwise it’s good.

NYX BUTTER GLOSS in APPLE STRUDEL:

IMG_6312

In. Love. I’m quite the NYX fangirl, but for some reason hadn’t picked up their Butter Glosses yet. This is such an insanely pretty colour which suits me really well, and it smells great. It’s non-sticky, not overly shiny, and feels nice and moisturizing on the lips. It doesn’t last forever though, I’d say you have to reapply every 2-3 hours.

BE A BOMBSHELL LASH OUT MASCARA:

IMG_6316

This is a decent mascara overall. I like the dryer formula (I’m not a fan of super wet mascaras) and it does a pretty good job of separating and lengthening my lashes which I like, however it doesn’t add much curl and isn’t anything special compared to other mascaras you can get. I also wish they would have used a waterproof mascara since this bag seemed extra beachy, but oh well! I like it and I’ll use it up, but I wouldn’t pay the $15 price tag for it.

NICKAK NEW YORK SHIMMER EYELINER in GREEN:

IMG_6319

I’m really enjoying this product! It’s very pigmented and the shimmer definitely shows up on the eyes well. It gets dry and cracks a little bit after about 4-5 hours of wear, and I’m not digging the brush. It’s plastic and I can’t go over the line I’ve made without the brush wiping off what I’ve done before, almost like a dry erase marker, haha! However it’s stayed on quite well and the colour makes it one of my favourite Ipsy products so far! It’s only $4.99 and I will definitely be picking up a lot more of these, the annoying brush is worth it.

SWATCHES:

IMG_6331

Overall I’d give this month’s Glambag 4/5 stars. The products are great and I’ll be using up all of them, the bag itself is the most stylish yet, and I’m excited to try out next month’s bag!
